Welcome to Social News

Posted by Dave Tarantula on January 25, 2008

Welcome everyone to my new blog. I used to use the blogger service but found the service very restricting. I am currently test driving wordpress at the moment to see if it suits my needs. In my entries I will be covering different topics such as Social Newsg Websites such as mixx and digg, Gaming, Game Development, Personal Life, and much more.

So for my first entry I’d like to talk about Social News. I mentioned mixx and digg above and they are actually what I am covering today. Currently digg is the top dog in Social News Networking. I was a big fan of a digg because of they way it so called revolutionized the way we view news. I loved how it was great place to come to for diverse Tech News, Gadgets, etc. But some where down the line they made a wrong turn. One for the worst, what once used to be a great service is now nothing but a slow loading web site, a broken comment system (which I’ll get into later), front page filled with spam, moderated submissions, etc.

I’m not the only one that misses the old digg. Many others do as well and have even voiced this. Last year digg encountered it’s revolt with the HD-DVD Key and now just recently they had another one due to the algorithm change. This is a slow sign that digg is just going to be getting worst. As I mentioned before the comment system is broken. Yes Mr. Kevin Rose released a statement on the digg blog saying they are releasing a faster and better version soon. The thing is though I don’t believe that it’s coming out soon. Everyone was promised a new comment system back in October and still nothing.

I have moved on from digg now to a much better Social News site called mixx. It reminds me of the digg everyone once new. It’s friendly, no one tries to compete, and there is a great community called The Mixxing Bowl which I’m currently designing it’s new forum layout. Which is to be released hopefully in a matter of weeks. All of the spam stories usually never make it to the front page and everyone does they’re part to keep it that way. On top of that the best thing to is, the creators of mixx are members of this forum and take feedback and feature requests from everyone. Something that the digg community doesn’t have and is an upper hand to mixx. I’ll blog on this more later. But I think as of right now you guys get where this is going.

Till then peace!

Mixx rocks! I’m glad to see you leave Blogger. Their sites are clunky and ugly. I mean, every single one I’ve been to, even the ones I frequent, are hideous. Just look at this site. Clean and fresh design. One of many wordpress offers. Maybe I’m biased as I’ve been using wordpress on my site for years. Either way, the site looks nicer than any blogger site I’ve seen (not that it’s hard to do).

I also love Mixx. Great sense of community and friendship on both Mixx and the mixxingbowl. Except for a couple of bad apples (I think you know who I mean), mixx users are friendly and considerate people.
